Is Your HVAC Limping Along? Here’s How to Troubleshoot Your System

Are you having HVAC trouble? Here are some tips to help root out the problem.

We rely heavily on our air conditioning systems, but when they have issues, it’s great to know some AC troubleshooting tips. We’ve got the ones you need to get to the root of the problem.

Check the Air Filter First

Sometimes the smallest steps can resolve the biggest issues. For example, a dirty or clogged air filter can lead to many HVAC problems, which is why it’s the best place to start HVAC troubleshooting. If your filter is dirty, swap it out for a new one.

Test the Thermostat

The next step in HVAC troubleshooting is the thermostat. If you’re having issues with the AC, this could be the cause. Make sure it wasn’t reset, and that the programming isn’t off. Also check the controller batteries to see if they need replacing.

Look at the Outdoor Unit

Is the outside equipment dirty? Does it have debris, leaves, mud, or branches impacting its operation? Clean the unit, clear away anything within a foot of the unit, and be sure the fan blades aren’t blocked.

Make Sure There’s Power

Sometimes there can be a blown fuse, a wiring issue, or even a switch turned off that can make your air conditioner fail. Check for power to the unit before calling for service.

Check the Vents

Are any of your vents closed? It’s a common myth that closing vents will save energy and create cooling zones in your home. If you have central air, you want all the vents open, even if only partially. Closed vents can affect how effectively your AC cools your home.

AC troubleshooting can help you find the cause of the problem if your system starts limping along. If you’ve tried the basics, it could be time for a visit from an HVAC professional. Contact G+S Heating and Air to schedule a service call to get your air conditioner back in action.
