How to Save Energy and Money This Summer

Heating and air conditioning expenses can take a big bite out of your annual budget. When the outside temperatures rise, so does the cost of keeping your home comfortable and cool. Try these money-saving tips for a comfortable summer that won’t break the bank.

Plant Trees & Shrubs

Trees and shrubs planted around your home block the direct sun and significantly lower the inside temperatures. According to the Department of Energy, planting shrubs to shade (but not block) an air conditioning unit “can increase its efficiency by up to 10%.”

Fans

Use whole-house fans at night to bring in the cool outdoor air throughout the house. Ceiling fans create a wind-chill, making you feel cooler so you can turn the thermostat up a few degrees. Make sure to turn the fans off when no one is around – saving a bit more.

Programmable Thermostat

Invest in a programmable thermostat to automatically monitor the temperatures in your home. Adjustments for day and night, or when you are and are not there can save nearly 10% according to the Department of Energy.

Keep out the Sun

Closing the blinds and curtains on sunny windows during the day will keep your house from heating up. Use light colors to reflect the light and hang them close to the windows to keep out radiant heat.

Everybody loves summer but not the cost of keeping cool. Try these tips to keep heating and air conditioning costs low this summer. For more ideas on keeping your home cool, call G+S Energy Services and talk to our Comfort Specialists today at (704) 933-2256.
