Common Commercial HVAC Noises and What They Mean

One HVAC unit with one spinnig blade and one motionless.

Not sure if you should enlist commercial services? Some HVAC sounds might warrant a phone call to the experts.

Calling commercial services isn’t something you should delay, but how do you know if you need them? If your workplace’s HVAC is producing sounds you haven’t heard before, you could be sitting on a problem that requires expert assistance. Read on for a look at some of the noises that could be indicative of an issue.

Commercial HVAC Rattling

Rattling sounds typically mean your motor or blower assembly has run into a problem. Specifically, it could be a sign that a component inside has become loose. This can mean big problems for your system, as a loose part could get stuck somewhere else.

Industrial System Hisses

Hissing sounds, whether from an HVAC system or a cat, never mean good things. Ongoing hisses can be a sign of air escaping from the system. If you're noticing the sounds coming from walls, this may indicate air leaks in the ductwork. This noise may be an annoyance, but more than anything it means wasted money as heated air leaks into walls instead of going where it's supposed to be.

HVAC Clanks are Never Good

If your system has started to issue clanking sounds, you’re very likely in trouble. Clanks can mean disconnected components, loose fan blades or piping issues. In other words, clanks mean you’ll need to get the system looked at just in case.
