Troubleshooting can help you determine why your heating and cooling equipment isn’t working correctly. Sometimes, homeowners can fix a problem on their own without scheduling repairs.

1. Check Your Fuses

Electrical issues are one of the most common problems responsible for interrupting heating and cooling devices. They’re also among the easiest to solve. The trickiest part is sometimes finding the breaker or fuse for your HVAC equipment. Some homes have smaller breaker boxes just for HVAC located near the unit. Older homes can have a fuse installed in a light fixture nearby. If the breaker or fuse is still performing, follow instructions on resetting your system, found inside the access panel.

2. Check Your Filter

Heating and air conditioning equipment relies heavily on the proper pressure to perform its best. If airflow gets blocked by a dirty filter, your system might not turn on, provide air that is as hot or as cold as expected, or stay running. Make sure to change your filter every one to three months, as directed. If you suffer from allergies, select a filter with a MERV rating from 11 to 13 to provide indoor relief.

3. Check Your Thermostat

If you’re concerned about your bills being too high, check your thermostat for programmable features. These allow you to schedule heating and cooling cycles, ensuring comfort when people are home and energy savings when they’re not.
